MESA 2.0
Mobility Enhanced Spectrum Analyzer
The REI MESA 2.0 (Mobility Enhanced Spectrum Analyzer) is a compact, handheld signal analysis system manufactured by Research Electronics International (REI) for Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM), RF interference troubleshooting, and security investigations. Engineered specifically for mobility, the instrument allows field operators to easily carry it throughout a target facility to locate illicit eavesdropping devices, RF transmitters, cellular activity, and unauthorized wireless signals. The performance of the MESA 2.0 centers on its rapid sweep capabilities and flexible frequency coverage. The baseline receiver operates across a range of 10 kHz to 6 GHz, which can be extended up to 12 GHz using the optional Down Converter antenna. Powered by a swept-tuned superheterodyne receiver architecture, the MESA 2.0 achieves sweep speeds exceeding 200 GHz per second. It features an Instantaneous Bandwidth (IBW) of 25 MHz and a dynamic Resolution Bandwidth (RBW) that auto-adjusts between 0.038 kHz and 312.5 kHz depending on the active span. To help detect weak signals, the unit incorporates a +15 dB preamplifier along with selectable attenuation settings (0 dB, 10 dB, 20 dB, or Auto). To handle diverse operational scenarios, the MESA 2.0 provides multiple dedicated software modes. In standard Spectrum Analyzer mode, operators can view live, peak, cached peak, and average traces, alongside raster waterfall and persistence displays to detect intermittent or frequency-hopping signals. The patented SmartBars™ mode utilizes non-linear bar graphs to highlight new RF energy relative to a baseline reference, offering a quick visual path into deeper spectrum inspection. The Mobile Bands mode monitors targeted frequency bands such as Wi-Fi or cellular networks and includes automated jammer and interference detection logging. Additionally, dedicated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes analyze access points, connected clients, BLE devices, and trackers (such as AirTags), providing RSSI signal-strength meters to help physically pinpoint hidden transmitters. A standout feature of the MESA 2.0 is its automatic probe recognition system, which automatically identifies connected REI smart antennas and configures the appropriate frequency spans without manual input. Beyond standard RF sweeps, the system supports comprehensive multi-threat detection—including Carrier Current, Acoustic Leakage, Infrared, Visible Light, and Ultrasonic probes. It also provides built-in AM and FM audio demodulation, integrated speakers, and standard audio ports. In terms of ergonomics, the MESA 2.0 is designed for extensive field use, weighing just 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg) with dimensions of 5 × 8 × 2 inches (13 × 20 × 5 cm). It features a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen with protective overmolding, an adjustable hand strap, and a kickstand. The system is powered by removable lithium-ion batteries that deliver approximately 3 hours of operational runtime per battery. For connectivity and data management, the MESA 2.0 includes two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port supporting remote VNC control, and an external USB GPS dongle for logging spatial data alongside spectral findings.
